Dear Dad,

This is Rie, my partner who I live with and the love of my life.

I wanted to tell you the truth, but I didn’t have the courage.  I wanted to introduce her to you while you were well.  I regret that I couldn’t be honest to you.  I often wonder what you would’ve said to me.  Would you have been happy for me as my mom was?  My family – me, my partner, and two cute cats – are happy, so don’t worry.  I hope you’re watching over us from heaven.

When I first came out in my twenties, it didn’t end well.  For the next twenty years, I have battled with wanting to live my true self and not wanting to be hurt again.  The latter has always won.

After turning forty, I went through series of illness, death and new encounters within a short period of time.  These experiences changed me.

“I want to be able to marry my partner who supported me through my cancer with her big smile and laughter so that I could protect her fully, I want to live as I am for the rest of my life, I want to make this world a better place to live for LGBTs of the future generation.”  These thoughts and feelings mounted which lead me to this biggest coming out in my life. I would like to tell out loud to the world that my wife and I love, care and respect each other and our life is fulfilled with bliss just as any straight couple.  I hope that this message, along with other messages, will lead to a society where everyone could live their true self.
